The daughter of French icon Serge Gainsbourg and singer/actress Jane Birkin, Charlotte Gainsbourg has achieved international stardom on her own terms as a multi-talented artist equal to either of her famous parents.
Gainsbourg made her recording debut on her father’s infamous 1984 single, “Lemon Incest.” Her debut album, produced and largely written by her father, followed in 1986, when Charlotte was just 15.
It would be 20 years until the release of Gainsbourg’s second album, 5:55. The acclaimed album featured English-language songs penned in collaboration with musician/songwriters like Jarvis Cocker, Neil Hannon, and Air’s Jean-Benoît Dunckel and Nicolas Godin.
In September 2007, Gainsbourg was struck down by a cerebral hemorrhage received during a water-skiing accident. The injury inspired the title of her 2010 Because Music/Elektra debut, IRM, which is the French translation of MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). Written and produced by the one and only Beck, the album earned Gainsbourg rave reviews and her widest musical audience to date. The Sunset Sound EP was released shortly thereafter, gathering four live tracks recorded with Beck at Hollywood’s famed Sunset Sound Recorders.
An award-winning actress as well as a singer/songwriter, Gainsbourg has appeared in such acclaimed films as The Science of Sleep, I’m Not There, and Antichrist.
