Sonny Redd
About Me
Sonny Redd was born in Texas and grew up in Arizona, living a life filled with trials and self-defining, “now or never” moments that shaped the lyrics of his raps and drove his musical focus. Focusing on his “love for music and hunger for success”, Sonny’s journey came to formation in Glendale, Arizona – a city known more for its tough street life and gangs than anything else. His young life was not untouched by hardships. My mother always taught me to be a decent man; to take care of business like a man and carry myself like a man”, he says. Reflecting back on the time, he notes his love for music for getting him through the worst times: “At that age I loved the ‘Soul Days’ music of Bobby Womack, especially ‘Across 110th Street’.” He was also influenced by other big names of the day, such as Biggie, Tupac, UGK, S.U.C., Cash Money and DMX.
When I was around seven, my friends and I would go out to the tether ball courts and I began writing little rhymes and spittin’ them for these kids I used to run with. That habit never stopped, and he continued finding inspiration from life and other artists. With his debut track “Anti-Freeze Freestyle”, Sonny Redd is taking his life and music to a new place – showing people that inspiration can come from the hardest life situations while still being real about the grim realities of a world that closes you in if you don’t keep your guard up. There was something always pushing me to go beyond. I’m sharing my life, my words, my story – we can rise above the shit and be true to ourselves. Showing others from my neighborhood that it’s possible is what I’m about”.
