Carly Simon was born into a successful publishing family in New York City. She first performed and recorded with her sister Lucy as The Simon Sisters. When Lucy married, they stopped performing together, and Carly began writing her own songs. When her debut album, Carly Simon, was released in 1971, the era of new singer-songwriters was unfolding. Her well-bred voice and sophistication were the perfect combination to convey her subtle sense of “relationships” inherent in her writing.

Holzman chose “That’s The Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be” as the first single, which become a considerable hit in the summer of 1971. Simon had perfected her own brand of melodiously laidback adult pop, and Carly Simon and Anticipation - both with irresistibly come-hither jackets - firmly established her as a significant presence.

Her next album, No Secrets, was given a shimmering rock production by Richard Perry, and it includes her most famous song “You’re So Vain,” still the subject of considerable speculation as to who it‘s about. That one song, a stunning worldwide hit established her as a major artist.

No Secrets, propelled by “You’re So Vain,” had been a #1 album, and she continued with Richard Perry for two more Top Ten albums, Hotcakes (1974) and Playing Possum (1975).
